EU says Intel tried to squeeze out Advanced Micro

(Reuters) - The two companies make all the chips at the processing heart of the world's one billion personal computers and servers, but Intel has about 80 percent of the business.




The European Commission, in its latest antitrust case to involve a technology giant, alleged Intel broke EU law "with the aim of excluding its main rival, AMD, from the x86 computer processing units market." X86 is the designation for the chips.

Nikkei seen extending gains but advance may be limited

(Reuters) - All of Japan's eight carmakers plan to stop some domestic production for up to three days to cope with a supply shortage from a key parts maker whose plants were hit by a powerful earthquake on Monday.




"AMD's strong results will likely support chip stocks here today, cancelling out the disappointing results from rival Intel, which prompted selling of those stocks here," said Kazuhiro Takahashi, general manager of the equity marketing department at Daiwa Securities SMBC.

AMD sees revenue shortfall, cuts spending plans

(Reuters) - "AMD is signaling that it is focusing more on nearer-term profitability as opposed to targeting market share," said JoAnne Feeney, managing director with FTN Midwest Securities.

"People were concerned about that strategy," Feeney said.
