Most U.S. mid-sized companies not hiring -survey

(Reuters) - The news adds to evidence the U.S. economy may not grow as
robustly next year as it did last quarter, when gross domestic
product grew at an annualized rate of 3.4 percent.




Not all companies are gloomy about employment -- 47
percent expect to hire, according to the survey from CIT and
the Economist Intelligence Unit. But 44 percent of mid-sized
companies see their workforce size staying the same, and 9
percent forecast a decline.

EU says Intel tried to squeeze out Advanced Micro

(Reuters) - The two companies make all the chips at the processing heart of the world's one billion personal computers and servers, but Intel has about 80 percent of the business.




The European Commission, in its latest antitrust case to involve a technology giant, alleged Intel broke EU law "with the aim of excluding its main rival, AMD, from the x86 computer processing units market." X86 is the designation for the chips.

Nikkei seen extending gains but advance may be limited

(Reuters) - All of Japan's eight carmakers plan to stop some domestic production for up to three days to cope with a supply shortage from a key parts maker whose plants were hit by a powerful earthquake on Monday.




"AMD's strong results will likely support chip stocks here today, cancelling out the disappointing results from rival Intel, which prompted selling of those stocks here," said Kazuhiro Takahashi, general manager of the equity marketing department at Daiwa Securities SMBC.

Subprime woe, Bernanke talk hit US stocks; IBM up late

(Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday on deepening concerns that a crisis in lending could spread and a warning from the Federal Reserve chairman that weakness in housing could hurt economic growth for some time.

Disappointing results from technology bellwethers also weighed on stocks. Shares of Intel Corp. and Yahoo fell nearly 5 percent after their quarterly scorecards fell short of some expectations.

U.S. Stock Index Futures Fall After Intel, Yahoo Reports: After-Hours Wrap

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stock index futures dropped
after results from Intel Corp., the biggest chipmaker, and Yahoo!
Inc., owner of the most-visited U.S. Web site, spurred concern
that profit forecasts for technology companies are too high.

Intel slid $1.17, or 4.4 percent, to $25.16 as of 6:09 p.m.
in New York after its profit margin trailed forecasts. Yahoo lost
$1.08, or 3.9 percent, to $26.49 as earnings declined.

Intel buys stake in EMC's VMware, gets board seat

(Reuters) - No. 1 chipmaker Intel will pay $23 a share for 9.5 million Class A common shares in VMware, giving it 2.5 percent of all outstanding common stock




VMware also said in a regulatory filing shedding new information on plans for its upcoming IPO that it expects to sell up to 37.95 million shares to the public for an estimated price of between $23 and $25 per share.

US STOCKS-Indexes flat before Fed rate decision

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, June 28 - U.S. stocks were treading
water on Thursday after data showed a measure of inflation
accelerated in the first three months of 2007 and before the
Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision.




Semiconductors were trading higher after chip makers Intel
Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. got
brokerage upgrades [ID:nWNA0822] [ID:nWNA0851] , while
financial shares were dragging on concerns about the subprime
mortgage market and the outlook for buyout activity.

S&P cuts Intelsat's debt rating, may cut again

(Reuters) - After the debt financing, Intelsat will have about 10
times as much debt as earnings before interest, taxes,
depreciation and amortization, up from an already aggressive
level of 7.4 times, S&P said in a statement.




S&P lowered Intelsat's rating by one notch to "B-plus,
the fourth-highest junk rating, from "BB-minus."

Intel sees better margin from STMicro venture

(Reuters) - Intel also expects the deal to decrease revenue and cost of sales in the fourth quarter, but it did not give a specific estimate in a regulatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday.



"Assuming this transaction closes late in the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter of 2007, Intel expects that fourth quarter 2007 revenue and cost of sales will decrease and gross margin percent should improve slightly while direct spending decreases slightly, but still within the full year forecast previously provided," said Intel's filing.

Intel, STMicroelectronics to create semiconductor company

(Reuters) - In exchange, Intel will get a 45.1 percent stake and a $432
million cash payment at close. STMicroelectronics will receive
a 48.6 percent equity ownership stake and a $468 million cash
payment at close.
