US STOCKS-S&P drops 1 percent as Bear Stearns sinks

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, Aug 3 - U S. stocks dropped on Friday,
with the S&P 500 losing more than 1 percent, after Standard &
Poor's cut Bear Stearns Cos. Inc.'s rating outlook,
dragging down shares of the investment bank and other
financial-sector stocks.




The Dow Jones industrial average was down 118.52
points, or 0.88 percent, at 13,344.81. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 14.72 points, or 1.00 percent, at
1,457.48. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 21.67
points, or 0.84 percent, at 2,554.31.

US STOCKS-Indexes gain on profit hopes in seesaw trading

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was up 57.72
points, or 0.44 percent, at 13,323.19. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 7.79 points, or 0.53 percent, at
1,466.74. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 12.69
points, or 0.50 percent, at 2,574.93.

US STOCKS-Indexes fall as credit concerns remain

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 51.37
points, or 0.38 percent, at 13,422.20. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 6.63 points, or 0.45 percent, at
1,476.03. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 11.50
points, or 0.44 percent, at 2,587.84.

Global stocks lower on credit woes

(Reuters) - As U.S. stocks continued to fall after a sharply lower opening, the decline triggered the New York Stock Exchange's downside restrictions on program trading at 11:06 a.m. ET.




At 11:42 a.m. the Dow Jones industrial average was down 202.41 points, or 1.47 percent, at 13,582.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 26.88 points, or 1.77 percent, at 1,491.21 and the Nasdaq Composite Index was down 42.47 points, or 1.60 percent, at 2,605.70.

Autoliv, Kemira, Metso, Scania, Skanska, Stora, UPM: Nordic Equity Preview

(Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall
in the Nordic markets. Symbols follow company names and prices
are from the last close.

The Dow Jones Nordic 30 Index lost 118.3, or 1.3 percent, to
9030.56 in Stockholm as 22 stocks fell, six rose and two were
unchanged.

European Stocks Pare Declines; GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca Shares Advance

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks pared declines as
shares of GlaxoSmithKline Plc and AstraZeneca Plc advanced.

Europe's Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index was little changed at
389.03 at 12:30 p.m. in London, after losing as much as 0.9
percent. The Stoxx 50 added 0.1 percent, while the Euro Stoxx 50,
a measure for the euro region, fell 0.2 percent.

(Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall

Dow Jones director resigns over takeover bid

(Reuters) - "I cannot prove my worries are right," he wrote in a letter
to the board that Dow Jones filed with the U.S. Securities and
Exchange Commission. "I can only refer to News Corp. practices
in the past."

Dow Jones director Li probed on insider trade: WSJ

(Reuters) - Li is chairman and chief executive officer of Bank of East Asia , a mid-tier Hong Kong lender. He is also a member of Hong Kong's Legislative Council.




Dow Jones's board on Tuesday endorsed a $5 billion buyout offer from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., sending the deal to Dow Jones' controlling Bancroft family for final approval. Dow Jones representatives were not immediately available for comment on Li.

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 143.72
points, or 1.03 percent, at 13,827.83. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 15.70 points, or 1.01 percent, at
1,533.67. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 38.03
points, or 1.40 percent, at 2,674.26.

U.S. Stocks Advance; Dow Average Climbs Above Record Close as Alcoa Gains

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks gained for a second day
after Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported sales that topped its
forecast and investors speculated Alcoa Inc. may be taken over.

Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, and Alcoa, the
second-biggest aluminum producer, led the Dow Jones Industrial
Average to a record. J.C. Penney Co., the third-largest
department-store chain, advanced after June sales exceeded
analysts' estimates.

European Stocks Pare Gains After Home Depot Reduces Profit Forecast

(Bloomberg) -- European stocks erased earlier gains
after Home Depot Inc., the world's largest home-improvement
retailer, cut its profit forecast, citing the sale of a unit and
a weaker U.S. housing market.

Europe's Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index slid 0.2 percent to
397.61 as of 9:39 a.m. in London. The Stoxx 50 fell 0.2 percent
and the Euro Stoxx 50, a measure for the euro region, dropped 0.3
percent.

Dow Jones, News Corp. talks not completed

(Reuters) - Dow Jones shares gained 1.6 percent to $58.77 on the New York Stock Exchange.




The comments countered a report in London's The Business weekly magazine that said the two sides have completed talks and were expected to announce a deal next week, citing unnamed sources acting for the Dow Jones board.

US STOCKS-Economic data and Apple push Nasdaq higher

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 11.06
points, or 0.08 percent, at 13,566.24. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was up 0.56 points, or 0.04 percent, at
1,525.43. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 11.70
points, or 0.44 percent, at 2,656.65.

U.S. Stocks Advance After Manufacturing Growth Accelerates; Costco Surges

(Bloomberg) -- Faster-than-expected growth in
manufacturing ignited the U.S. stock market on July's first
trading day, extending the best second-quarter advance for the
Standard & Poor's 500 Index since 2003.

Costco Wholesale Corp. climbed to a record after Goldman,
Sachs & Co. advised buying the shares, helping push the Nasdaq
Composite Index to a six-year high. Caterpillar Inc., United
Technologies Corp. and Honeywell International Inc. carried the
Dow Jones Industrial Average to its first gain in three days.

Wall Street Journal reporters protest Murdoch bid

(Reuters) - Between 150 and 175 reporters took part and Journal bureaus
in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas and elsewhere were nearly
empty, according to a Journal reporter who declined to be
identified because of fears of retribution if Dow Jones sells
itself to Murdoch's News Corp.




The Journal employs about 600 editorial staff in the United
States and 700 worldwide, a spokesman said.

(Reuters) - * Negotiators reached an agreement in principle on
protecting the editorial independence of The Wall Street
Journal, an important step toward a purchase by the News Corp.
of the Journal's owner, Dow Jones and Co. Inc. ,
people briefed on the talks said.




* In a move to challenge Google Inc.'s YouTube,
News Corp.'s MySpace plans to rename and refurbish its
video-sharing service on the popular social network. The new
service, called MySpace TV, will be set up as an independent
Web site that people can visit to share and
watch videos.
