London Stock Exchange to Buy Italian Bourse for $2.2 Billion, People Say

(Bloomberg) -- London Stock Exchange Plc agreed to
buy Italy's Borsa Italiana SpA, three people familiar with the
plan said, as increased competition forces the world's equity
markets to consolidate.

The U.K. exchange, Europe's third-largest, will offer about
1.6 billion euros ($2.2 billion) for the Italian market, said the
people, who declined to be identified before the release of a
statement. A holding company will be formed with seven directors
from the LSE and five from the Borsa. LSE Chief Executive Officer
Clara Furse will head the company while the Borsa's chief Massimo
Capuano will be deputy CEO, the people said.
