UPDATE 1-House, Senate panels approve USDA/FDA spending bills

(Reuters) - WASHINGTON, July 19 - The U.S. House and Senate
Appropriations Committees each passed fiscal 2008 agriculture
funding bills that increase spending for food safety and set a
timeline to put country-of-origin labels on red meats beginning
in fall 2008.




Most of the money in the bills goes to the Agriculture
Department, which oversees inspection of meat and poultry and
is responsible for public nutrition programs, among other
things. Fiscal year 2008 begins on Oct. 1.
